Add and subtract by counting on and back

This unit covers learning to add by counting on from the largest number as well as adding by counting on in tens. In the first two tasks, each bug shows two numbers. students need to identify the larger of the two numbers and then count on in order to write an equation that corresponds to the working they have just done. The next two activities are the same but focus on counting back in order to calculate subtraction equations. The final activity breaks counting on in 10s down to its smallest parts. Students are asked to complete the sums by showing their working e.g.. Instead of working out 53 + 40 by counting on in 10s from 53 in their heads, students must write '53 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 = 93.
