Using tidy numbers to solve problems (3)
In this unit students revise solving problems by jumping a tidy number on a number line, then jumping back a small number, for example we can solve 24 + ___ = 82 by jumping 60 on a number line to 84, jumping back 2 (to 82), then taking 2 away from 60, giving the answer of 58 i.e. 24 + 58 = 82. Number lines provide valuable visual support for some tasks in this unit. An activity that asks students to calculate the number of remaining seats on planes challenges students to perform this calculation without the support of a number line.
